In 1892, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 797,480 ten dollar gold coins, struck from 0.4838 troy ounces of pure gold. These pieces entered circulation without a mint mark, a traditional characteristic of issues from the nation's primary minting facility. Today, surviving examples preserved in certified Mint State 61 condition offer a direct look at late nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the central bust, representing the original colonies, with the date 1892 anchored at the bottom. This classic depiction was created by Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a shield draped across its chest. The bird holds the traditional symbols of national strength and peace. Surrounding this central motif are the legends declaring the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the denomination of TEN D.
