1892 Liberty Head V Nickel Fine
The year 1892 marked a classic era in American minor coinage, exemplified by this Liberty Head five-cent piece. Struck from a base metal alloy containing no precious metal, this coin represents the everyday commerce of late nineteenth-century America. It survives today in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that circulated widely in the pockets of everyday citizens. Designed by Charles Barber, the obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a coronet-style headdress inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1892 positioned at the bottom. The reverse is dominated by a large Roman numeral V, representing the five-cent denomination. This central symbol is encircled by a wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
