In 1893, the Philadelphia Mint produced this ten-dollar gold piece, a survivor of a time when precious metal coins circulated freely. While the original mintage reached 1,840,840 pieces, countless numbers of these coins were melted down in subsequent decades, making surviving specimens like this one, preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, fascinating objects of study. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her, representing the original colonies, with the date 1893 positioned at the bottom. This classic depiction was created by Christian Gobrecht, whose work graced this coin series throughout its production run from 1838 to 1907. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a shield across its chest. The bird holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps around the upper border, while the denomination TEN D. is struck below, completing a design that contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold.
