In 1893, the Philadelphia Mint produced a five-cent piece that remains a classic representative of late nineteenth-century American coinage. This Liberty Head nickel, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcases the intricate details of a design that circulated widely during a transformative decade in United States history. The obverse of the coin presents a dignified portrait of Liberty. She is depicted facing left, her hair styled elegantly and adorned with a coronet or crown that clearly displays her name. Framing this central image are stars along the border, with the year of minting, 1893, anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, the coin features a prominent Roman numeral V, representing its five-cent face value. This central letter is encircled by a decorative wreath, which is itself surrounded by the national identification and the traditional motto. The inscriptions on this side include the words of national unity, E Pluribus Unum, alongside United States of America, completing a design conceived by Charles Barber.
