0.4838 troy oz .900 1894 Almost Unc

In 1894, the Philadelphia Mint struck this ten dollar gold piece, a denomination known as the Eagle. Containing 0.4838 troy ounces of pure gold, this coin represents a design tradition that spanned nearly seven decades, from 1838 to 1907. Today, these surviving pieces are particularly compelling because vast numbers of the original mintages were melted down in later decades, leaving only a fraction of the original population for modern enthusiasts to study. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her profile, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands proudly with a shield draped across its chest, clutching symbols of national power. The legend reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA alongside the denomination, TEN D. This particular example survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details crafted by designer Christian Gobrecht.
