In 1895, the Philadelphia Mint struck this ten-dollar gold piece, a denomination with a rich legacy in American coinage. Containing 0.4838 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, these coins were produced during an era when precious metal circulated daily. Over the years, vast numbers of these gold issues were melted down, making surviving examples in About Uncirculated condition particularly intriguing to explore. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her profile, representing the original colonies, with the date 1895 positioned below. This classic representation was created by designer Christian Gobrecht, whose work graced this series throughout its production span from 1838 to 1907. On the reverse, a bold heraldic eagle guards a shield on its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN D. surround the central motif, alongside the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This coin stands as a remarkable survivor of nineteenth-century American minting.
