The year 1896 saw the production of a classic piece of United States coinage, the Liberty Head five-cent piece, commonly known as the V Nickel. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin carries no mint mark, which was standard for the facility at the time. Composed entirely of base metals without any precious metal content, this coin is a survivor from the late nineteenth century, preserved in Very Good condition. On the obverse, the design by Charles Barber showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a coronet or crown inscribed with her name, while the date 1896 is positioned clearly below her bust. The word LIBERTY is visible on her headpiece, anchoring the classic American motif. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a large Roman numeral V, representing its five-cent face value. This central numeral is encircled by a wreath, which is in turn surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination CENTS. At the very top, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, completing a design that remains a favorite among those who appreciate historical American currency.
