Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1897 Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents a classic era of United States coinage. The twenty dollar gold piece contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Having survived in exceptional condition, this specific specimen is certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), preserving the fine details of its nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty, her hair styled in a loose bun with curls cascading down her neck. She wears a pearl-bordered coronet that clearly displays the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1897 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, designer James B. Longacre placed a heraldic eagle with wings fully spread, bearing a shield on its chest. Above the eagle, thirteen stars form an oval pattern beneath a halo of rays, accompanied by the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The outer edge is encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. This design was a staple of American currency, minted from 1850 to 1907.
