0.4838 troy oz .900 1899 Almost Unc

In 1899, the United States Mint in New Orleans struck this ten-dollar gold piece, a denomination known as the Eagle. Containing 0.4838 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 90 percent, this coin represents a time when precious metal circulated as everyday currency. Over the decades, vast numbers of these gold issues were melted down, making the surviving specimens compelling objects of study for historians and collectors alike. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin's imagery captures the artistic spirit of nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, all encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse presents a proud heraldic eagle shielding its chest, surrounded by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, TEN D. This particular coin has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the details of its historic design.
