Struck in the opening year of the twentieth century, this ten-dollar gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted at the Philadelphia facility, it carries no mint mark, which distinguishes it from issues struck at branch mints. The coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.4838 troy ounces of the precious metal, and comes from a total mintage of 1,718,740 pieces. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair secured by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her portrait, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, its chest protected by a shield. The eagle is surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, recorded as TEN D. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this design captures the artistic style of pre-1933 United States gold currency.
