The 1901 Liberty Head five-cent piece represents a fascinating era of United States base-metal coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin contains no precious metal, yet its artistic execution rivals the gold and silver denominations of its day. The obverse presents a dignified profile of Liberty, who wears a crown adorned with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, the coin features a prominent Roman numeral V, representing its five-cent face value.
