1904-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-64 NGC (CAC)

0.9675 troy oz .900 1904 NGC

In 1904, the San Francisco Mint struck more than five million double eagles, representing a classic era of United States gold coinage. This twenty dollar denomination contains nearly a full ounce of gold, specifically 0.9675 troy ounces, within its 0.900 fine gold composition. Designed by James B. Longacre, this series spanned from 1850 to 1907 and remains one of the most recognizable examples of historic American currency. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, her hair secured by a band bearing the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle her portrait, with the year 1904 positioned at the bottom. This particular coin has been certified in Mint State 64 condition and verified for its exceptional quality, preserving the sharp details of Longacre's design. On the reverse, a powerful American bald eagle is depicted with wings fully spread, clutching an olive branch and a cluster of arrows in its talons. The reverse is rich with inscriptions, including the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. A small S mint mark below the eagle indicates its origin at the San Francisco facility, which was one of six mints to produce this famous design over its half-century run.
