The 1905 Liberty Head nickel represents a fascinating era in United States coinage, showcasing a design created by Charles Barber. Struck in Philadelphia, this five cent piece carries a distinct aesthetic that defined American pocket change at the turn of the twentieth century. On the obverse, Liberty is depicted facing left, wearing a coronet headdress inscribed with her name. The year 1905 is clearly struck below her portrait. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a large Roman numeral V, representing the five cent denomination. This central numeral is encircled by a wreath, which is itself surrounded by the legend denoting the United States of America and the traditional motto E Pluribus Unum.
