The year 1909 marked a major transition in United States coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent. Replacing the long-running Indian Head design, this new copper penny was created to honor the centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. It represented a significant shift in American numismatics, placing a historical president on a regular-issue circulating coin for the very first time. Above his likeness, the national motto reads IN GOD WE TRUST, while the word LIBERTY is positioned to his left, and the date 1909 sits to the right.
