1909-S/Horizontal S Lincoln Cent MS-65 PCGS (Red)

0.0000 troy oz 1909 MS-65 (PCGS)

The debut year of the Lincoln cent brought forth one of the most intriguing minting anomalies in United States numismatics. This particular copper penny, struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1909, features a dramatic repunched mintmark variety. Upon close inspection, a horizontal "S" is visible beneath the standard, vertically oriented "S" mintmark, revealing a rare moment of human error in the die-preparation process. Designed by Victor David Brenner, the obverse of the coin displays the classic portrait of President Abraham Lincoln facing right, accompanied by the inscription of the year 1909 and the word LIBERTY. The reverse design showcases two stylized ears of wheat framing the denomination, and it also bears the initials of the designer. Graded at an exceptional Mint State 65 (MS-65) with a vibrant red designation, this specimen preserves the fine details of Brenner's artistry alongside a captivating manufacturing blunder.
