1909-S Lincoln Cent BU
The year 1909 marked a monumental shift in United States coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln cent, replacing the long-running Indian Head design. This particular specimen, struck at the San Francisco Mint as indicated by the small S mint mark below the date, represents the very beginning of one of the most widely collected series in numismatic history. Preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition, the coin retains its original luster and sharp details just as it looked when it left the coining press over a century ago. Designed by the sculptor Victor David Brenner, the obverse of this copper coin features a highly detailed, right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln, a depiction that remains an iconic symbol of American currency. Above the president's bust, the reassuring motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed, while the word LIBERTY stands clearly to his left, and the date 1909 is positioned to his right. The reverse of the coin presents a clean and elegant composition featuring two stylized wheat ears framing the central inscriptions. The denomination ONE CENT is boldly displayed at the center, positioned directly above the issuing country, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This classic wheat reverse design would go on to define the look of the American penny for fifty years, making this first-year San Francisco issue a foundational piece of American design history.
