Introduced in 1909, this copper cent represents the very beginning of the long-running Lincoln series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the coin carries the distinctive 'S' mint mark on its obverse, positioned just below the date. The face of the coin features a detailed profile portrait of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the familiar inscriptions of liberty and trust. The reverse of the coin is defined by two stylized stalks of wheat framing the denomination. This particular first-year issue also displays the initials of the designer, Victor David Brenner, at the bottom of the reverse design. Finding these initials on the early 1909 San Francisco strikes makes this issue a compelling study in early twentieth-century American coinage.
