1909-S Lincoln Cent VF-25 PCGS

0.0000 troy oz 1909 Very Fine - 25 (PCGS)

The year 1909 marked a monumental shift in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent, replacing the long-running Indian Head design. This particular specimen, struck at the San Francisco Mint, represents a key moment in numismatic history. Crafted from copper, the coin features the iconic profile of Abraham Lincoln on its obverse, facing right. Above his portrait, the classic motto reads "IN GOD WE TRUST", while "LIBERTY" is inscribed to his left, and the date 1909 is positioned to his right. The reverse of the coin showcases a minimalist yet elegant design featuring two stalks of wheat framing the denomination. The inscriptions "ONE CENT" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are boldly displayed in the center, surrounded by the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM" along the top rim. This simple wheat ears motif would define the reverse of the penny for half a century. With a remarkably low mintage of just 484,000 pieces, the 1909-S is one of the most famous issues in the entire series. Designed by Victor David Brenner, this coin has been certified in Very Fine 25 condition, showing honest wear that highlights its over a century of survival. It remains a fascinating artifact from the dawn of the Lincoln penny era.
