The year 1909 marked a major transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent. This particular specimen, minted in San Francisco, represents one of the most discussed issues in the entire series due to a specific design detail on the reverse. With a mintage of just 484,000 pieces, it stands as a remarkably scarce survivor from the inaugural year of the design. Created by Victor David Brenner, the obverse of the coin features a detailed portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing right. The inscriptions of liberty and trust frame the president. On the reverse, two stylized wheat ears flank the denomination. At the very bottom of the reverse, the designer's initials, V.D.B., are clearly visible. This inclusion caused immediate public discussion, leading to the prompt removal of the initials later in the year and cementing this original variety's place in numismatic history. This copper coin has been certified in Fine 15 condition. At this grade level, the coin exhibits honest wear from brief circulation, yet the essential elements of Lincoln's portrait, the wheat stalks, and the highly sought-after San Francisco mint mark and designer initials remain distinct and legible.
