1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent MS-64 NGC (Red)

0.0000 troy oz 1909 MS-64 (NGC)

The year 1909 marked a major transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln cent, a design that remains a cornerstone of pocket change today. Among the earliest issues of this series, the pieces struck at the San Francisco Mint carry a special allure. This particular specimen is preserved in a remarkable Mint State 64 condition, displaying the highly sought-after original red color of its copper composition. What makes this specific issue so compelling is its incredibly low mintage of just 484,000 pieces. The obverse features the classic portrait of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the legible inscriptions LIBERTY and the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, the tiny initials of the designer, V.D.B., are placed at the very bottom, a feature that was famously removed shortly after production began, making this San Francisco issue one of the most famous and desired treasures in American numismatics.
