The 1909 Lincoln Cent marks a monumental shift in American coinage, introducing the portrait of Abraham Lincoln to the one-cent piece. This specific coin, struck at the San Francisco Mint, carries the highly discussed initials of the designer, V.D.B., on the reverse. Because these initials were removed shortly after production began, this initial release remains one of the most famous and sought-after issues in the entire Lincoln series. On the obverse, the portrait of Lincoln faces right, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the date 1909.
