The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent stands as one of the most famous issues in the history of United States coinage. Struck in copper at the San Francisco Mint, this coin represents the very first year of the iconic Lincoln cent series. Its obverse features the classic, dignified bust of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the word LIBERTY. The reverse design showcases two wheat ears framing the denomination, a simple yet elegant layout that would define the penny for decades. What makes this particular issue incredibly famous is the tiny inscription at the bottom of the reverse: the initials V.D.B. These letters belong to the coin's designer, Victor D. Brenner. Originally, the designer's full name was intended to appear on the coin, which was then shortened to just his initials. Shortly after production began, a public controversy erupted over the prominence of Brenner's initials on the reverse. This outcry led the Treasury to order their immediate removal. Because of this rapid design change, the San Francisco Mint ceased production of the initial version after striking a mere 484,000 pieces. This extremely low mintage, caused by the sudden halt in production, has made the 1909-S VDB a legendary rarity. This specific specimen is certified in Very Fine 35 condition, displaying the warm brown tones characteristic of circulated copper that has survived for over a century.
