1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent VF

0.0000 troy oz 1909 Very Fine

The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent stands as one of the most famous and sought-after treasures in American numismatics. Minted in San Francisco during the very first year of the Lincoln cent series, this coin is exceptionally scarce due to its low mintage of just 484,000 pieces. It represents a pivotal moment in United States coinage, marking the transition to honoring a historical president on the circulating penny. Designed by Victor David Brenner, the obverse features a detailed portrait of Abraham Lincoln looking to the right. Above his bust, the classic motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed, flanked by LIBERTY on the left and the date 1909 with the 'S' mint mark below it. The reverse is framed by two stylized ears of wheat, enclosing the denomination ONE CENT and the nation of origin. What makes this specific issue legendary is the presence of the designer's initials, V.D.B., prominently placed at the very bottom of the reverse design, a feature that was quickly removed shortly after production began.
