The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent stands as one of the most famous issues in the entire history of United States coinage. Struck in copper during the very first year of the Lincoln penny series, this coin represents a major shift in American numismatic design. The obverse features the iconic right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the solemn phrase IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, the design showcases two stylized wheat ears curving around the denomination ONE CENT and the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is arches across the top. What makes this particular issue so legendary are the tiny initials V.D.B. at the very bottom of the reverse, representing the designer Victor David Brenner, paired with the S mint mark of the San Francisco Mint below the date on the obverse. With a remarkably low mintage of just 484,000 pieces, this specific coin has been certified in Very Good 10 condition. At this grade level, the coin shows honest wear from its time in circulation, yet it still clearly displays the essential details of Brenner's historic artistry and the highly sought-after designer initials that caused such a stir in 1909.
