In 1909, a major transition occurred in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent. This copper coin, composed of 95 percent copper, marked a departure from previous designs by honoring a real historical figure on the obverse. The right-facing portrait of Abraham Lincoln occupies the front, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Below the date, the S mint mark indicates this piece was struck at the San Francisco Mint. The reverse of the coin features two stalks of wheat framing the denomination ONE CENT and the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. At the very bottom edge of this reverse side, the tiny initials V.D.B. are visible, representing the designer Victor D. Brenner. These initials were removed shortly after production began, making this specific variety highly notable. With a total mintage of just 484,000, this particular issue represents the scarcest release in the entire Lincoln Cent run. This specimen is preserved in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the essential details of this historic first-year design.
