1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent XF-40 NGC

0.0000 troy oz 1909 NGC

The 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent stands as one of the most famous and sought-after issues in the entire history of United States coinage. Struck in copper during the very first year of the Lincoln Cent series, this coin represents a major design transition for the nation's minor coinage, moving away from the Indian Head design to honor the sixteenth president of the United States. Designed by Victor Brenner, the obverse of the coin features a detailed, right-facing portrait bust of Abraham Lincoln. Above his likeness, the national motto of trust is inscribed, flanked by the word liberty and the historic 1909 date. Below the date, the 'S' mint mark indicates its origin from the San Francisco Mint. The reverse of this copper cent is framed by two stylized wheat ears, which curve around the central denomination of one cent and the country of origin. What makes this specific issue incredibly famous is the presence of the designer's initials, V.D.B., prominently placed at the bottom rim of the reverse. Because of a limited mintage of just 484,000 pieces before the initials were removed, this coin remains an enduring symbol of American numismatic history, preserved here in Extremely Fine 40 condition.
