The year 1909 marked a major transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent. Designed by Victor Brenner, this copper penny replaced the long-running Indian Head design and brought the likeness of Abraham Lincoln to the circulating one-cent piece. This specific coin, minted in San Francisco, represents one of the most famous and sought-after issues in the entire history of United States coinage. The obverse of the coin displays a detailed portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing right, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and the date 1909, with the S mint mark positioned just below the date. Above the bust, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed. The reverse features two stylized wheat ears framing the denomination ONE CENT and the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. At the very bottom rim of the reverse, the designer's initials, V.D.B., are clearly visible, a feature that was removed shortly after production began.
