The year 1909 marked a monumental shift in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent, replacing the long-running Indian Head design. This particular specimen is preserved in a certified Mint State 64 condition, displaying a captivating blend of original red and brown copper luster. It represents the very beginning of one of the most widely recognized and enduring coin series in United States history. Designed by Victor D. Brenner, the obverse of the coin features a detailed profile bust of Abraham Lincoln facing right. Above his portrait, the familiar motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed, while the word LIBERTY sits to the left, and the date 1909 is positioned to the right. The design brought a new level of realistic portraiture to circulating American currency. The reverse design is elegantly simple, showcasing two wheat ears framing the central inscriptions. The denomination ONE CENT and the country of origin UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are clearly legible. This initial release is highly celebrated for bearing the designer's initials, V.D.B., at the bottom of the reverse, a distinctive feature that was famously removed shortly after production began.
