1909 VDB Lincoln Cent MS-65 NGC (Brown)

The year 1909 marked a significant transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent. This copper penny represents the very first year of the iconic series, featuring the portrait of Abraham Lincoln on the obverse. Above his profile, the familiar motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, flanked by "LIBERTY" and the date of production. What makes this particular issue famous is the reverse design, which displays two stalks of wheat framing the denomination "ONE CENT" and the country name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". At the very bottom edge of the reverse, the tiny initials of the designer, Victor David Brenner, are prominently displayed as "V.D.B." This design detail became a point of immense public interest and was removed shortly after production began, making the original 1909 issues with these initials highly celebrated. This specific specimen has been certified in Mint State 65 with a beautiful brown coloration. Out of a mintage of 27,995,000 from the Philadelphia Mint, finding an example that retains such exceptional detail and preservation offers a fascinating glimpse into early twentieth-century American minting history.
