The year 1909 marked a significant transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent, replacing the long-running Indian Head design. This particular copper piece is preserved in an exceptional Mint State 65 condition, displaying a captivating red and brown coloration that highlights the preservation of its original surfaces. Designed by Victor David Brenner, the obverse of the coin features a detailed profile bust of Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by the familiar inscriptions of liberty and trust. The reverse design is framed by two stylized wheat ears curving along the border, centering the denomination and the country of issue. Most notably, this early variety features Brenner's initials, V.D.B., prominently placed at the very bottom of the reverse design, a detail that was removed shortly after production began, making this first-year issue especially intriguing to explore.
