The year 1909 marked a significant transition in American coinage with the introduction of the Lincoln Cent, a design that honored the nation's sixteenth president. This copper coin features the familiar profile bust of Abraham Lincoln on its obverse, accompanied by the classic inscriptions of liberty and trust. It represents the very beginning of one of the longest running and most beloved series in United States numismatic history. What makes this particular first year issue incredibly famous is the reverse design, which showcases two stylized wheat ears framing the denomination. At the very bottom of this reverse side, the prominent initials VDB are clearly visible. These letters represent the designer, Victor David Brenner. Shortly after the initial release of these coins from the Philadelphia Mint, the inclusion of the designer's initials caused a public stir, leading to their prompt removal later in the year and making this original variety a fascinating focal point for study.
