In 1911, the San Francisco Mint struck a copper cent that remains a classic of American coinage. This particular specimen, preserved in Extra Fine condition, showcases the early years of a design that would become a staple of daily commerce. The coin represents the early twentieth century transition in United States coinage, moving toward highly detailed, artistic portraits of historical figures. The obverse of the coin features a detailed profile bust of Abraham Lincoln, facing right. Above his portrait, the familiar motto readies the viewer with "IN GOD WE TRUST", while the word "LIBERTY" stands to the left of the bust. The date 1911 is positioned to the right, with the small "S" mint mark of the San Francisco facility resting just beneath it. On the reverse, the coin displays a simple yet elegant layout. Two stylized stalks of wheat frame the central inscriptions, which declare the denomination as "ONE CENT" and identify the issuing nation as the "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".
