In 1920, the United States issued a special silver half dollar to mark the three hundredth anniversary of the Pilgrim landing. This commemorative coin, struck in 90 percent pure silver, captures a pivotal moment in early American history through the artistry of sculptor Cyrus Dallin. The obverse of the coin presents a solemn portrait of Pilgrim Governor William Bradford. He is shown cradling his Bible close to his chest, a powerful representation of the faith that guided the passengers of the historic voyage. On this side, the legend includes the words PILGRIM TERCENTENARY CELEBRATION alongside the familiar motto IN GOD WE TRUST. A small letter D is also visible, which serves as the personal signature of the designer, Cyrus Dallin, rather than indicating a mint mark. On the reverse, the design shifts to the legendary ship, the Mayflower, sailing across the sea. The inscriptions on this side record the significant years of 1620 and 1920, framing three centuries of history.
