1925 Norse-American Centennial Thick Medal BU

0.5663 troy oz .900 1925

Struck on an unusual eight-sided planchet, this 1925 silver medal commemorates the centennial of Norwegian settlers arriving in Minnesota in 1825. Though not legal tender, the piece was officially authorized by the United States Congress, with a mintage of 33,750 specimens. Each medal contains 0.5663 ounces of 90 percent pure silver and boasts a Brilliant Uncirculated finish. The obverse showcases a powerful depiction of a Norwegian Viking chieftain prepared for battle. The warrior is outfitted with a horned helmet, a shield, a sword, and a dagger. Bold lettering surrounding the figure highlights the Norse-American Centennial, marking the years 1825 to 1925. On the reverse, a traditional Viking ship sails across the center. The design includes references to congressional authorization and the approximate year of the Vinland settlement, marked as A.D. 1000. This side also bears the artist signature "OPUS FRASER," indicating the work of sculptor James Earle Fraser.
