1934 Texas Centennial Half AU

In 1934, the United States minted a striking silver half dollar to commemorate one hundred years of Texas independence. This coin, struck in 90 percent silver containing 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal, showcases an incredibly detailed and symbolic design by sculptor Pompeo Coppini. The issue was produced from 1934 through 1938, with this particular specimen surviving in Almost Uncirculated condition. The obverse of the coin presents a powerful eagle positioned in front of a large, five-pointed star, representing the Lone Star State. This side carries the traditional inscriptions of liberty and the half dollar face value. On the reverse, the artistry becomes even more complex. A winged figure of Victory kneels in the center of the composition. Flanking this central figure are two small portrait medallions depicting key historical figures Stephen Austin and General Sam Houston. The design also incorporates the memorable phrase to remember the Alamo, alongside the dual commemorative dates of 1836 and 1936.
