The 1938 Texas Independence Centennial half dollar stands as a remarkably detailed tribute to a pivotal moment in American history. Struck in 90% silver, this coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. It was minted during a five year commemorative run spanning from 1934 to 1938, with this final year of production featuring an exceptionally small mintage of just 3,780 pieces. Designed by sculptor Pompeo Coppini, the coin features highly complex imagery on both sides. The obverse depicts a bold five pointed star positioned directly behind a perched eagle. On the reverse, the central focus is a kneeling, winged representation of Victory. Flanking this figure are two small portrait medallions showcasing Texas pioneers Stephen Austin and General Sam Houston. The Alamo is also represented on the reverse, alongside the dual dates of 1836 and 1936 to mark the centennial of independence, and the final production year date of 1938.
