1939-D Jefferson Nickel AU

0.0000 troy oz 1939 Almost Unc

The 1939 Jefferson nickel represents only the second year of this classic United States coin series. Struck at the Denver Mint, this particular issue is notable for its relatively low mintage of 3,514,000 pieces. Finding this coin in Almost Uncirculated condition offers a wonderful glimpse into the early years of a design that became a staple of American pocket change for generations. Designed by Felix O. Schlag, the obverse of the coin displays a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1939 year of issue. The reverse features Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. Below the building, the denomination is spelled out as FIVE CENTS, with the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wrapping around the bottom rim. The traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is positioned above the dome of the estate, while the small D mint mark is located to the right of the building, indicating its origin at the Denver facility.
