In 1939, the United States Mint continued production of a fresh design that would become a staple of American pocket change for generations. This five cent piece, struck in Philadelphia during the second year of the series, represents the early era of the Jefferson nickel. The coin is composed of a copper alloy, carrying no precious metal content, yet it holds immense appeal for those fascinated by the evolution of everyday coinage. The obverse features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, designed by Felix O. Schlag. Accompanying the third president's likeness are the familiar inscriptions of trust and freedom, reading "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY", alongside the 1939 date. On the reverse, Schlag's design showcases Monticello, the historic Virginia estate of Jefferson. The building is centered above its name, "MONTICELLO", and is framed by the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" at the top. The lower edge bears the denomination "FIVE CENTS" and the country of origin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".
