In 1940, the Denver Mint produced this five-cent piece, a beautiful representative of mid-century American coinage. Struck in a copper alloy, this coin has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its original engraving. The coin is part of the long-running Jefferson Nickel series, which replaced the Buffalo nickel and became a staple of daily commerce. The obverse side presents a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson facing left. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar patriotic inscriptions, including the national motto of trust and the word liberty, alongside the 1940 year of issue. On the reverse, the design showcases Monticello, Jefferson's famous neoclassical estate in Virginia. The building is depicted in detailed perspective, centered above the denomination of five cents and the country of origin, the United States of America. The traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one, is also clearly visible, completing a design created by Felix O. Schlag.
