1940-D Jefferson Nickel Avg Circ
In 1940, the Denver Mint struck this five-cent coin, continuing a classic American series in its early years. Designed by Felix O. Schlag, the coin presents a distinct profile of Thomas Jefferson on its front, facing left. The legendary mottoes of American coinage frame his portrait, with the words of liberty and trust clearly legible alongside the year of production. The back of the coin features Monticello, the famous Virginia estate of the third president. Below the building, the denomination is spelled out as five cents, accompanied by the national name and the traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one. Positioned just to the right of the estate is the small D mint mark, indicating its origin at the Denver facility. This circulated specimen offers a direct look at the everyday currency that circulated through the United States during the era of the Second World War.
