In 1940, the Denver Mint produced a classic piece of American pocket change that remains a favorite for observers of mid-century design. This five-cent coin, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, represents the early years of a design series that would span decades. The obverse features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Accompanying his likeness are the traditional national mottos, including the trust placed in a higher power and the concept of liberty, alongside the year of production. On the reverse, the coin displays Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The building is rendered in fine detail, situated above the denomination of five cents. The inscription of the national motto signifying unity out of many, along with the identifying country name, frames this architectural vignette. A small letter D is placed on the reverse to indicate its origin at the Denver minting facility.
