1940-S Jefferson Nickel BU

0.0000 troy oz 1940 Brilliant Unc

The 1940 Jefferson nickel offers a window into the early years of this long-running United States coin series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this specific piece survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the sharp details of its original design just as it looked when it left the coining press over eight decades ago. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1940 year of production. On the reverse, the coin displays a detailed depiction of Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The home is centered above the denomination, FIVE CENTS, and the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The traditional Latin motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, is inscribed along the top rim, while the distinct S mint mark is positioned to the right of the building, indicating its origin from the West Coast minting facility.
