In 1941, on the eve of the United States entering World War II, the San Francisco Mint produced this Jefferson nickel. Struck in its original pre-war composition of copper and nickel, this coin represents the classic era of American circulating coinage just before emergency alloy changes were introduced. This particular piece survives in average circulated condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that passed through many hands during a pivotal moment in global history. The obverse features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Accompanying his likeness is the familiar national motto of trust. On the reverse, the design showcases Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. Below the stately building, the coin displays its face value of five cents and the country of origin, alongside the traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one. A small S mint mark is positioned to the right of the estate, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility.
