1942-D Jefferson Nickel BU
In 1942, the Denver Mint produced a classic piece of American pocket change that remains a favorite for design enthusiasts. This particular five-cent piece survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, offering a remarkably clear look at the artistry of the era. The coin's composition belongs to the standard pre-war nickel alloy, struck before wartime resource conservation altered the metal makeup of the denomination later that year. The obverse features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions of faith and freedom, including the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY," alongside the date of 1942. Felix O. Schlag designed this enduring portrait, capturing a dignified representation of the statesman. On the reverse, Schlag depicted Monticello, Jefferson's famous Virginia estate. The grand neoclassical building is rendered in fine detail, centered above the denomination "FIVE CENTS" and the country of origin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" curves along the top rim, while the distinct "D" mint mark is positioned to the right of the homestead, indicating its origin at the Denver facility.
