In 1942, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof Jefferson nickels using the traditional pre-war metallic composition. This specific coin, designated as the Type I variety, represents the final chapter of the original nickel alloy before emergency wartime changes altered the coin's makeup later that year. With a mintage of just 29,600 pieces, these early 1942 proofs are highly valued for their scarcity and the historical transition they represent. This specimen has been certified in Proof 65 (PR-65) condition, showcasing the sharp details and polished fields characteristic of the era's proof-manufacturing process. The obverse features the classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson alongside the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1942". The reverse displays Jefferson's historic home, Monticello, centered on the coin. Surrounding the building are the traditional inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM", "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", and the denomination "FIVE CENTS". True to the Philadelphia minting standards of the time, this Type I coin carries no mintmark, distinguishing it from the Type II silver-alloy nickels that followed.
