1943-D Silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel BU

0.0562 troy oz .350 1943 Brilliant Unc

During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. This 1943 issue from the Denver Mint contains 0.056 troy ounces of silver, part of a special wartime alloy created to save strategic metals for the war effort. Strikingly preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this coin represents a fascinating moment in mid-century American history when everyday pocket change was altered by global events. The obverse of the coin displays a classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third president. Surrounding the profile are the familiar inscriptions of trust and liberty, alongside the wartime date of 1943. Felix O. Schlag designed this iconic imagery, which became a staple of American coinage. On the reverse, the design showcases Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. Positioned prominently above the dome of the building is the 'D' mint mark, indicating its origin at the Denver facility. This placement was a deliberate feature of the wartime silver nickels, making them easily distinguishable from the standard pre-war base metal composition. The reverse also bears the traditional mottoes and the denomination of five cents.
