In 1943, the United States Mint produced a highly unusual variation of the familiar Lincoln cent. Rather than the traditional copper alloy, these pieces were struck in steel and coated with a thin layer of zinc. This metallic shift resulted in a bright, silver-like appearance that sets the 1943 issues apart from all other years in the long-running series. The obverse of this coin features the classic portrait of Abraham Lincoln looking to the right. Above his likeness, the inspiring motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed, while the word "LIBERTY" sits to his left and the date "1943" is positioned to his right. This specific example remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the original luster of the zinc-coated steel. On the reverse, the design showcases two stylized wheat ears framing the central inscriptions. The denomination "ONE CENT" and the country name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are clearly legible. Minted in Philadelphia without a mint mark, this coin represents a massive production run of over 84 million pieces, serving as a shining example of mid-century utility and alternative metallurgy.
