During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. This 1943-S Jefferson Nickel represents a fascinating chapter in wartime coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint with a special alloy containing silver and manganese to conserve nickel for military production. The obverse features the classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1943 date. This particular specimen has been certified in exceptional Mint State 66 (MS-66) condition, preserving the sharp details of the original engraving and the unique luster of the wartime metal blend. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello, is depicted in fine detail. Above the dome of the mansion, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is clearly visible. The reverse also prominently displays the mint mark S positioned directly above the dome, a distinctive feature of these wartime issues. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE CENTS frame the lower portion of the design, completing this highly graded piece of American numismatic history.
