During a pivotal year in the mid twentieth century, the composition of the familiar United States one-cent piece underwent a dramatic transformation. The 1943-S Lincoln cent stands out as a fascinating relic of this era, characterized by its striking silver-colored appearance. Rather than the traditional copper alloy, this issue was struck on steel planchets coated with a thin layer of zinc, a material choice driven by wartime resource needs. The San Francisco Mint produced more than 191 million of these unique steel cents. The obverse of the coin features the classic, detailed bust of President Abraham Lincoln looking to the right. Legible inscriptions on this side include the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the word LIBERTY and the date of 1943. The reverse is framed by two stylized wheat ears, which flank the central denomination of ONE CENT and the country name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This specific specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the original metallic luster of the zinc-and-steel composition as it left the minting facility.
