During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. This 1944 specimen from the Denver Mint is struck in a thirty-five percent silver alloy, a metallic departure from the traditional copper-nickel mixture. This particular coin has survived in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a high grade of Mint State 67 with the coveted Full Steps designation, which highlights the exceptionally sharp definition on the reverse design. The obverse of the coin features the classic left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Surrounding his profile are the familiar national mottos and declarations, including the trust in a higher power, the word liberty, and the 1944 date of manufacture. These elements remain crisp and clear, framed by the lustrous surfaces of the silver-alloy planchet. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello, is depicted in fine detail. The steps of the mansion are fully realized, a feature highly prized by numismatists as it indicates a remarkably strong and complete strike. The reverse inscriptions present the traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one, along with the denomination of five cents and the country of origin.
